The Wonders of the KitchenAid Artisan Mixer

Having the right tools in the kitchen it you are a cooking enthusiast makes all the difference. These days there are cooking appliances to suit every budget, however how do the cheaper appliances compare to those more expensive ones? Take the analogy of an office chair at an office workers workplace. How productive will they be sitting on a wooden bench all day? Probably not very, because after a few hours they will feel uncomfortable and will not be very enthusiastic in their work or be able to concentrate very well. Now give that same worker a deluxe multi-adjustable gas lift chair with electronic adjustments and you can imagine how much better they will work. Well its more or less the same in the kitchen, with a good knife you will be able to cut your ingredients properly and will not become frustrated by the prospect of trying to cook with a blunt knife.

Now take the case of a kitchen mixer. I have had several cheaper quality mixers in my time, I thought the problems that I faced with them every couple of days was normal, and you just had to deal with it. I experienced everything from the mixer not getting to all parts of the bowl to motors just plain burning out and sometimes even affecting the flavour of the food. Finally I decided enough was enough and it was time to get a good quality mixer. All I can say is I wish I had done it sooner. Suddenly I could do all the things that used to be tedious chores with ease. Not only that but having a new modern model also allowed me to do a whole range of things that would have been impossible with my inferior quality ones. For example making bread and doughs with the included dough paddles was now a cinch.

Some of the newer type of kitchen mixer, apart from being more powerful than models found in the past can now do more as well. For example on some you can add extra attachments which utilise the motor for different purposes. An example of such an attachment which is available on some is a cold press juicer attachment. This allows you to turn your mixer into a juicer in just a minute or two. Good cold press juicers are not cheap so this is a great benefit of better quality models.

Probably the best known mixers for their quality today are KitchenAid mixers. Watch any professional cook worth their weight in salt on any cooking show and they will have a KitchenAid mixer in the background. The KitchenAid Artisan is a great entry grade mixer that offers a host of great features. So if you are tired of your old mixer, or you love to cook and like to have the best cooking appliances available it may be time to upgrade. You will be thanking yourself.

Fair Trade Coffee

Coffee is one of the most widely available and used beverages in the world today. Coffee is drunk from one end of the globe to the other, often in quite different forms. Coffee has become a way of life for some people in the western world. Cafe chains have sprung up everywhere and a few have done very well setting up new stores weekly across the globe. However this massive industry has to have a supply, where does all this coffee come from?

Most coffee is grown at high altitudes and needs quite a specific sort of climate. There are limited places in the world were coffee will grow. It would therefore be logical to think that coffee growers would be some of the richest people in coffee producing countries, for example in Peru. Nothing however could be further from the truth. The farmers of the drink many of us know so well have traditionally been some of the poorest people in the countries they live in. They are often rural farmers paid just enough by large companies to survive, and more recently less than enough to survive.

The current economic downturn has seen coffee prices plunge in the last few years prompting companies who had built up large stockpiles (as prices were so cheap already) to drastically reduce their buying of raw coffee beans and in some cases stop altogether. Interestingly the price of coffee in our cup has not gone down at all but has seen quite a rise in the last few years. So how does this happen? How do the growers get paid less and less and sometimes nothing at all, yet the price of coffee that we drink continues to go up and up? That is a complex question to answer but well worth pondering next time you are having a nice hot cup of coffee.

Fair trade coffee changes all that. Under the Fair trade system farmers get a set price for their produce, on average about 5 times more than what they were getting paid previously by large multi-national corporations. The emergence of this type of commercial model is a heart warming example that business can be done and it can work without exploiting the farmers at the end of the money chain.

Auto Anti Theft Devices

Auto Anti Theft Devices
———————————–

These days most new cars come with security devices installed at the factory, usually a simple alarm or rudimentary immobiliser at least. However, for those of you without the latest and greatest inbuilt security system that are usually found on more expensive model cars there are ways you can make your car safer. There are plenty of aftermarket devices that will help you keep you car out of the hands of thieves. Sometimes it takes just a simple deterrent, worth maybe $50, for a potential thief to pass on by and look for an easier target.

Perhaps the oldest and the simplest method of keeping you vehicle safe is by using a club lock. Club locks have been around for some time and the fact they are still being sold is testament to their effectiveness. A lock of this type provides a strong visual deterrent to a would be thief. Seeing a car with a club lock, the thief will probably just move onto the next car. However if someone really wants your car because it is rare or valuable a club lock can be worked around, so for high value cars an electronic alarm system is recommended. So club locks do provide a strong deterrent but are limited in that a dedicated thief will sooner or later get past a club lock and also it does not provide any security for the contents of your car. A thief may not be able to steal the car but may be able to get in a steal your laptop from within for example.

Electronic auto anti theft devices come in many different forms and cater for every budget. Essentially a good electronic alarm will do two things: Firstly it will sound an alarm if an attempt is made to break into it thereby alerting the owner and passers by that the car is being broken into. Secondly, it can immobilise the engine so that the thief cannot start the car even if they managed to get into the car (while the alarm was sounding). The use of an immobiliser makes it almost impossible to steal the vehicle. Some advanced systems employ a range of other techniques to ensure that the vehicle stays safe. For example you can get a GPS tracking system as part of some security systems or as a separate module that you can actually see where you car is at all times by logging on to a web page and tracking it on a map.

(for Auto Anti Theft Devices)

For most of us our vehicles are vital in our day to day lives. To suddenly find yourself without a car can be a real pain and one that most people want to avoid at all costs. However there are some simple cost effective ways to add that little bit extra security to your car. Most security products to protect a vehicle can cost anywhere from $40 for a basic but effective club lock to the thousands of dollars for high tech new electronic security systems. Using a security device on your vehicle has the added benefit of not only physically making it harder to steal but it also serves as a deterrent to put the would be thief off the idea from the start.

Club Locks – Simple but Effective

Club locks are great simple anti theft devices that make it very hard for all but the most determined thief to steal your vehicle. I remember when I got my first car, literally the first day I got it I went straight to the shop and bought the best club lock I could find. After all my first car was special for me and I didn’t want it to disappear. The good news is that it worked. Whether or not anyone would have actually wanted to steal the old 1970s Fiat Sports is questionable, but I felt safe knowing that it was there guarding my car parked on the street each night. Club locks are cheap and effective, if your budget is $40-$100 then the club lock is for you. See the slide show below to see available models.
Electronic Security Systems – For all budgets

Electronic security systems have come along way in the last decade. What used to be relatively expensive and ‘high tech’ back in the early 90s is now available to the general public at a price that is very affordable. Cheap systems these days start at about $50-$60. You would be forgiven for thinking that such cheap systems must be just a simple horn alarm or something similar. Where as in fact they are actually quite decent in terms of functionality. For example a somesystems offer not only an alarm but also provide the added benefit of remote engine start and keyless entry.

Are Goji Berries the Wonder Food People Claim?

If you have heard anything about Goji berries then you have probably heard they are quite amazing.

Steeped in ancient mystery these berries that come from the region between China, Tibet and Mongolia, have been used in ancient medicine for as far back as 5000 years. They have been well documented in Chinese medical texts, noteably in the physicians handbook (Ben Cao Gang Mu recorded during the Ming Dynasty 1368-1644 A.D.) in which he describes the effects of eating the Goji berry as most beneficial. He wrote “Taking in Chinese Wolfberry / Goji Berry regularly may regulate the flow of vital energy and strengthen the physique, which can lead to longevity.”

History aside, these berries that have only relatively recently come into the mainstream in western societies have incredible nutritional value. They simply don’t compare with any other plants that we know of. For a start they contain 18 kinds of amino acids. Amino acids play a central role as both the building blocks of proteins and as intermediates in metabolism. That alone does not sound so amazing until you realize that there are only 20 amino acids. So here is a food that has 18 out of the 20 amino acids found in proteins. Even our own bodies only produce 10 out of the 20 amino acids. Furthermore failure to get enough of even 1 of the 10 amino acids that the human body does not produce can result in degradation of the body’s protein resulting in muscle breakdown. Goji berries contain all 8 essential Amino acids! Unlike other food substances that we eat the body does not store the amino acids we need so regular intake of the needed amino acids is vital to maintaining good health.

And as if that wasn’t enough they also contain 21 trace minerals, most noteably zinc, iron, copper, calcium, germanium, selenium, and phosphorus. Zinc is essential for the human body and is said to be essential to the synthesis of DNA and protein and cell division. Iron is also an essential part of our diet and is needed to transport oxygen in our blood. Geranium is a very interesting trace mineral. Its health benefits have again only recently come to light, and early research shows some very promising finds. One important discovery is that germanium has been shown to boost the immune systems response in cancer patients, clinical trials are now underway to understand the benefits of germanium further.

Goji berries, apart from the 18 amino acids and 21 trace minerals also contain antioxidant carotenoids, including beta-carotene and zeaxanthin. In fact Goji berries have the highest levels of carotenoids of all plants known. By Weight they contain 500 times more vitamin C than oranges, giving them the second highest level of vitamin C in all plants that we know of. Goji Berries also contain the vitamins B1, B2, B6, and vitamin E.

As you can see the benefits of these berries seem amazing and indeed they are. It would take a whole book to go through the finer points of the goodness contained within Goji berries, one of natures true wonders.
